Ritual on the Day of Yuanshi Tianzun
We perform the ritual in honor of Yuanshi Tianzun (元始天尊) at the beginning of the lunar year. Yuanshi Tianzun — the Primordial Heavenly Lord — is the first among the Three Pure Ones (三清), the highest deities of the Daoist tradition. He represents the absolute of the Dao, the primordial principle before the emergence of the manifested universe.
On this day, temples hold rituals in honor of the precondition and source of all that exists. Followers light incense, recite Daoist sacred texts, and meditate on the unity before the division into yin and yang. It is a time of inner purification and attunement with the original emptiness (无极, wuji).
The festival coincides with the energy of a new beginning — as the lunar year awakens, the practitioner also opens to the primordial source of life.
