Ritual on the Day of Yuanshi Tianzun

The Yuanshi Tianzun (元始天尊) ceremony is held on the winter solstice. Yuanshi Tianzun — the Primordial Heavenly Lord — is the first of the Three Clear Ones (三清), the highest deities of the Taoist tradition. He represents the absolute Dao, the primordial principle before the emergence of the manifested universe.

On this day, rituals are performed in temples to honor the prerequisite for the origin of all that exists. Followers light incense, recite Taoist sacred texts, and meditate on the unity before the separation into yin and yang. This is a time of inner purification and attunement to the original emptiness (无极, wuji).

The holiday coincides with the energy of a new beginning — as the lunar year awakens, the practitioner also opens up to the original source of life.
